Description

This work is built on a heavily worked surface marked by layering, scraping, and visible revision. Paint is applied in blocks and planes, then fractured and disturbed, leaving cracks, ridges, and exposed underlayers intact. The surface retains the evidence of process throughout, with no attempt to soften transitions or conceal corrections — the work wears its construction openly.

Multiple faces occupy the composition, embedded within a grid of intersecting lines and geometric divisions. These figures do not dominate the space; instead, they appear integrated into a broader system of structure, colour, and interruption. The grid functions as a framework rather than a constraint, allowing elements to coexist without resolving into hierarchy.

A small central figure introduces scale and orientation. Its presence is understated, functioning as a point of reference rather than a focal demand. This contrast between the larger faces and the minimal human form creates tension without drama, suggesting observation rather than confrontation.

Colour plays an active but controlled role. Ochres, blues, off-whites, and muted reds are layered and contained within structural boundaries, allowing contrast to emerge without visual excess. The palette supports clarity while maintaining friction across the surface.

Linear marks move across faces and fields, acting as traces rather than boundaries. They disrupt continuity without collapsing structure, reinforcing the sense of a space held in balance between order and disruption. The composition remains open, allowing the viewer to move through the surface rather than be directed toward a single conclusion.

The process remains fully visible. Scratches, fractures, and embedded forms register as records of decision and adjustment rather than embellishment. The work holds presence within a shared field — not isolated, not resolved, and not dramatized — allowing tension to exist without narrative closure.
