Description

The surface of Held Between Bloom and Break is layered and thinned, with translucent passages stretched across the field rather than built up for density. Petal forms appear scored and pulled into place, their edges uneven and fragile, as if the material has been drawn outward to the point of strain. Washes bleed and stain into one another, leaving residues and soft fractures rather than clean transitions. The surface remains visibly worked, with fine scuffs, interruptions, and exposed underlayers left intact.

Despite the floral structure, the composition resists sentimentality. Stems are rendered as dark, wiry lines — irregular, tense, and slightly unstable — cutting through the lighter forms without decoration. Circular arcs and drifting marks hover nearby, suggesting imposed structure that never fully resolves. The geometry is present but unsettled, creating a quiet friction between growth and constraint.

The background carries a sense of erosion rather than atmosphere. Colour pools and thins unevenly, producing areas that feel worn back or partially erased. Lightness here is not softness; it reads as vulnerability under pressure. Each element feels held in suspension, balanced between expansion and collapse.

Nothing is polished or idealised. The process remains visible throughout — layers adjusted, edges stressed, marks left to stand as records of decision and revision. The work holds its tension without theatricality, existing in a narrow space between emergence and fracture.
